Mastering English for Junior High School Students
English proficiency at the junior high level emphasizes understanding various text genres and mastering fundamental grammatical structures.
1. Text Genres in English Examinations
- Descriptive Text: Focuses on describing a particular person, place, or thing in vivid detail (Identification + Description). Uses simple present tense.
- Narrative Text: Entertains and teaches moral values through complications and resolutions (Orientation + Complication + Resolution). Uses past tense (e.g., fables, folklore, fairy tales).
- Recount Text: Retells past personal experiences or historical events chronologically (Orientation + Events + Re-orientation).
- Procedure Text: Explains step-by-step instructions on how to make or do something (Goal + Materials/Ingredients + Steps). Uses imperative sentences (Cut, Boil, Mix).
2. Essential Grammar Rules
- Passive Voice: Used when the action itself is more important than who performed it.
Formula: Subject + Be (is/am/are/was/were) + Past Participle (V3).
Example: 'The book was written by Andrea Hirata.' - Conditional Sentence Type 1 (Real Possibility in Present/Future):
Formula: If + Simple Present (V1/s/es), Subject + will + V1.
Example: 'If she passes the exam, her parents will buy her a new laptop.'
